Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973) and Friedrich Hayek (1899-1992) were perhaps the foremost defenders of the free market and limited government during the mid-twentieth century ascendancy of Keynesian economics.
Mises highlighted the problem of economic calculation in non-market economics. He saw the price system as the basis of economic calculation, and emphasized the importance of sound money for it to work properly. Mises created an all-encompassing theory of economics as a system of human action. Hayek emphasized the role of knowledge in economics, asserting that man "cannot acquire the full knowledge that would make mastery of events possible." He insisted that capitalism has improved the living conditions of workers. Hayek received the Nobel Prize in 1974.
Where Have All The Leaders Gone? - Lee Iacocca with Catherine Whitney - Simon & Schuster
Lee Iacocca does not mince words, and in where have all the leaders gone? he offers his no-nonsense, straight-up assessments of the American politicians most likely to run for president in 2008.
The most widely recognized business executive of all time asks the tough questions that America's leaders must address:
What is each of us giving back to our country?
Do we truly love democracy?
Are we too fat and satisfied for our own good?
Why is America addicted to oil?
Do we really care about our children's futures?
Who will save the middle class?
Lee Iacocca believes that leaders are made in times of crisis - such as today. He has known more leaders than almost anybody else - including nine U.S. presidents, many heads of state, CEO's of the nation's top corporations, celebrities, and even a pope - and is uniquely suited to share his wisdom, knowledge, and wit about the leadership of America. Lee Iacocca does not mince words, and in where have all the leaders gone? he offers his no-nonsense, straight-up assessments of the American politicians most likely to run for president in 2008. He also shares his lessons learned, and issues a call to action to summon Americans back to their roots of hard work, common sense, integrity, generosity, and optimism.
An epic work of fiction, the dramatic, intertwining tale of two families struggling to make a place for themselves in an America deeply divided after the Civil War.
Hailed as "remarkable" (Philadelphia Inquirer), "astonishing" (Essence), and "spellbinding" (Detroit Free Press), Lalita Tademys first novel, Cane River, was a New York Times bestseller and the 2001 Oprah Book Club Summer Selection. Now, once again, Tademy weaves together history and the story of her own family to bring us an epic work of fiction, the dramatic, intertwining tale of two families struggling to make a place for themselves in an America deeply divided after the Civil War.
For the newly freed black residents of Colfax, Louisiana, the beginning of Reconstruction promised them the right to vote, own property, and, at last, control their own lives. But in the space of a day, angry whites would take back Colfax in one of the most brutal incidents of racial violence in Southern history. In the bitter aftermath, the Tademys and the Smiths will have to deal with the wreckage, push on, and build a better life for their sons and daughters over the next seventy years.
Bonus Material includes: Family Tree and Album Maps and Markets. An Author Interview and Narrator Photos
